    Melvin Van Peebles, born on August 21, 1932, in Chicago, Illinois, pursued his higher education at Ohio Wesleyan University.

    Thirty days after graduating, he joined the Air Force and served for three and a half years.

    Artistic Journey

    After a brief stint in Mexico as a portrait painter, Van Peebles returned to the United States and boarded a cable car in San Francisco.

    His experiences commuting inspired him to write his first book, "The Big Heart," which evolved from a photo essay into a full-fledged novel. Inspired by a suggestion from a passenger, Van Peebles directed his first short film, "Pic
