Biography of Matthias Jakob Schleiden
Matthias Jakob Schleiden (1804-1881) was a German botanist known for his contributions to the field of cytology and plant physiology.
He was born on April 5, 1804, in Hamburg.
Education and Academic Career
Schleiden studied law at the University of Heidelberg before pursuing his interest in botany and medicine. He continued his studies at the universities of Göttingen, Berlin, and Jena, where he focused on botany and medicine.
In 1839, Schleiden became a professor of botany at the University of Jena, a position he held until 1862.
He then transitioned to become a professor of anthropology at the University of Dorpat (now Tartu) in 1863.
