Amilcare Ponchielli: An Italian Opera Master
Early Life and EducationBorn on August 31, 1834, in Paderno Fasolaro, Italy, Amilcare Ponchielli displayed an early talent for music.
He enrolled in the Milan Conservatory in 1843, graduating in 1854.
Orchestral and Churcal Career
From 1854 to 1856, Ponchielli served as an organist at the Sant'Ilario Church in Cremona. He subsequently became the conductor of the Piacenza Municipal Band.
In 1881, he was appointed music director (maestro di cappella) at the Bergamo Cathedral, but returned to the Milan Conservatory the following year as professor of composition.
Operatic Successes
Ponchielli's operatic career began with "I promessi sposi" (The Betrothed) in 1856.
